Today, we are living in a country that is experiencing strong economic growth. People’s living standards are continuously improving, and Vietnam is increasingly integrating with the world. However, in recent years, social evils have gradually infiltrated the school environment. These issues erode moral values, degrade personal character, and cause students to neglect their studies, ultimately jeopardizing their own futures. In light of the serious consequences caused by social evils, families, schools, and society must take timely preventive measures. For this reason, a legal awareness seminar titled “Social Evils in Schools – Consequences and Prevention Measures” was organized to help students understand the harmful impacts and severe consequences of social evils, as well as how to stay away from them.
At 7:30 AM on October 28, 2022, in Room A301 at Lac Hong University, the Faculty of Business Administration – International Economics (FAIE) organized a legal dissemination and awareness session with the participation of many lecturers and students. Notably, the event welcomed two distinguished speakers: Mr. Phan Van Chau (President of the Dong Nai Provincial Lawyers Association) and Mr. Le Quang Vinh (Director of the Dong Nai Provincial State Legal Aid Center).
The seminar began with opening remarks from PhD Nguyen Van Tan (Dean of FAIE), who shared profound insights with students regarding social evils in the school environment. He particularly emphasized the issues of school violence and drug abuse.
Mr. Phan Van Chau then provided an in-depth analysis of the harms and preventive measures related to school violence. In the past, violence mainly manifested as bullying and physical harm. However, with the development of the internet, new forms such as cyberbullying have emerged. Victims of school violence suffer not only physical pain but also psychological trauma, which can create fear and anxiety about attending school. To prevent school violence, students should practice self-restraint, avoid conflicts, and report incidents to teachers and school authorities for appropriate intervention. Beyond school violence, young people today also face other social evils such as gambling, prostitution, and drug abuse.
Following Mr. Chau’s presentation, Mr. Le Quang Vinh highlighted that drugs are a major threat to society. They harm health, degrade human dignity, destroy family happiness, and seriously impact social order and national security. Drug abuse is a pressing issue that requires immediate prevention. To avoid drug-related risks, students should remain vigilant against temptations and invitations from malicious individuals, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and promptly inform parents or teachers if they detect drug-related activities.
After the insightful presentations, students participated in an engaging mini-game session with attractive prizes from the Organizing Committee, creating an enthusiastic and lively atmosphere.
Before concluding the seminar, the Organizing Committee allowed time for students to ask questions. One practical and thoughtful question was: “If I go out with friends and someone secretly puts drugs into my drink without my knowledge, and the police conduct a check, would I be considered in violation and face penalties?” Mr. Le Quang Vinh responded: “In the case of unintentional use of narcotics, you would not be penalized. However, you must not continue using them; otherwise, you will be sanctioned according to the law.” His response reassured students while emphasizing the importance of resisting temptations to protect their futures.
Social evils in schools remain a pressing issue for society in general and the education sector in particular. Regardless of where they occur, social evils leave severe consequences. Therefore, families, schools, and authorities must take practical actions to prevent these issues and ensure that students develop and study in a safe and healthy environment.
