Training a high-quality workforce for the semiconductor industry in Dong Nai (Article 1)

Article 1: Three pillars in semiconductor human resources training in Dong Nai

The recent semiconductor chip shortage crisis has crippled production lines in some countries. In this context, the semiconductor chip industry in Southeast Asia has emerged as a solution and Vietnam is expected to become a focal point in the global semiconductor industry value chain. Semiconductors have been defined by the Government as one of the nine national products. Therefore, the demand for high-quality human resources is huge in the semiconductor chip industry.

Prospects for semiconductor chip human resources in Dong Nai

According to data from the National Science and Technology Information Portal, as of the end of 2023, the country had recorded more than 5,500 chip design engineers while the demand for semiconductor human resources in Vietnam is 5,000 - 10,000 engineers/year. Thus, Vietnam's human resources for the semiconductor chip industry are currently still very modest.

Dong Nai embraces the most industrial parks in the country, along with its favorable geographical position and transportation. In recent years, the provincial government's "inviting" policy has attracted the attention of many major investors in the semiconductor chip sector.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Linh, Secretary of the Dong Nai Provincial Party Committee said "Most recently, in October 2023, Coherent Corp. (USA) has also worked with the Provincial Party Committee's leaders, proposing to implement projects related to high technology in the fields of optics and semiconductors. Accordingly, the business has asked the provincial leaders to pay attention to the possibility of meeting electronics and semiconductor labor resources for high-tech projects invested in Dong Nai."

Semiconductor human resources training in Dong Nai - the participation of relevant parties

Training and developing Dong Nai's semiconductor human resources is important, requiring the synergy of relevant parties to maximize the available resources, in addition to the 3 major pillars of Government - Industry - University.

Secretary of Dong Nai Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Hong Linh witnessed the signing ceremony to establish a semiconductor IC Center between LHU and Sun Edu International Education Joint Stock Company

Based on local universities' current resources (lecturers, facilities, teaching equipment, training programs, ...), in early 2024, Dong Nai's leaders selected and approved permission to establish a Semiconductor IC Center at LHU with the companionship of Sun Edu International Education Joint Stock Company - a leading prestigious international training organization in the electronics and semiconductor IC fields.

Accordingly, the two sides will focus on developing advanced training programmes, providing theoretical knowledge and practical skills for students in order to improve the capacity of students and prepare them to become high-quality experts in electronics and semiconductor IC.

Synopsys Inc. of the U.S is also committed to supporting LHU's training and research for IC design. Synopsys will support LHU in building a semiconductor IC Lab and training lecturers in the field of IC design through a short-term training program called "Train-the-Trainer".

Lecturers will work at Synopsys (headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City) for 4 months to foster practical knowledge. The training course is scheduled to start from April 2024.

According to a leader of Dong Nai province, the IC Design Center at LHU will contribute to realizing the Government's goal of forming a team of 50,000 engineers for this industry by 2030, while also aiming to promote the development of the semiconductor ecosystem and create new momentum and attraction to strengthen high-tech investment in Dong Nai and the Southeast region.
